Testo critico
E oggi?

At the heart of this exhibition lies a gesture that is both stubborn and fragile: an artist who, day after day, gets up and picks up a painter's roller to paint the sky. An impossible action, certainly, yet charged with the kind of truth that only poetry can express. In Painting the Clouds (With Feet Firmly on the Ground), Alex Urso performs his secular and visionary ritual, a daily performance that speaks of the condition of the artist, suspended between dream and profession, freedom and precarity.

The project is part of a timely and necessary reflection on the condition of the contemporary artist. What does it mean to be an artist today? What is the weight, the dignity, and the limit of a profession that is not always recognized as such? Urso attempts to answer these questions without words, but through a gesture that is ironic and poetic, everyday and powerful.

The artist has always been surrounded by an ambiguous aura. The nineteenth-century Romantic and bohemian vision—the impoverished, inspired, rebellious artist, living on the margins yet in complete creative freedom—has shaped a powerful imaginary that has survived even the transition into consumer society. Today, in a context dominated by international art fairs, biennials, private foundations, and structured curatorial systems, the figure of the artist moves between glamour and precarity. While contemporary art is increasingly spectacularized—with red carpets, billionaire collectors, and exclusive exhibition openings—for the overwhelming majority of artists, reality remains one of parallel jobs, economic uncertainty, and unstable projects.

Alex Urso revisits the figure of the artist by dismantling its mythical image and restoring it to a real, everyday, and at times uncomfortable dimension.

As Albert Camus wrote, "To create is to live twice"—but that second life, the artist's life, often collides with a concrete reality made up of bills, side jobs, and a lack of protection. And so that seemingly absurd act—painting the invisible—becomes the very symbol of artistic practice.

Painting the Clouds emerges precisely from this tension. The photographs exhibited in Novara are a selection from a broader project developed over the course of a year, during which Urso documented, every single day, his gesture of "painting the sky." An action that becomes ritual, a metaphor for artistic practice, but also a reflection on the meaning of work. The work is rooted in the artist's own biography—a house painter out of necessity, an artist by vocation—yet it opens itself to a broader, almost sociological reading.

Urso begins with his own biography to offer a collective vision: that of a generation of artists living a double life. The history of art is full of artists who always had another profession: Burri was a doctor, Warhol worked in advertising, Lee Krasner was both a decorator and a waitress, Mangold was a museum guard and librarian at MoMA. And today? Today artists teach, work as technicians, graphic designers, craftspeople. As Santa Nastro reminds us in her essay How Do Artists Live? Life, Economy, Relationship with the Sector and Practice, artists' biographies are filled with parallel occupations: a necessity, but also a source of perspectives and languages. A "double life" that is not the exception but the silent rule of our time: artistic work is (almost never) enough to sustain those who practice it.

The difficulty of making a living exclusively through creative work does not concern only visual artists, but also profoundly affects musicians, actors, performers, curators, and all those working within the cultural sector. It is an entire ecosystem built on talent and dedication that too often rests upon precarity and invisibility, despite making an essential contribution to the spiritual and symbolic life of society.

This is also confirmed by recent studies showing that, across Europe, only a minority of cultural workers are able to make a living exclusively from their creative practice, despite public policies that are slowly attempting to address a systemic gap marked by inadequate contractual recognition and fragmented forms of protection.

Within this context, Urso's project acquires an additional meaning: bringing art outside its conventional spaces, literally "attaching" it to the walls of the city, intercepting passers-by and citizens in the course of their everyday lives. In doing so, the artist not only challenges the conventions of artistic display, but also makes his presence visible within a shared, unprotected, real space. No longer the artist confined to the studio or the "white cube," but out on the street, among billboards and commercial messages, "painting" clouds that he can never truly touch. Exhibiting his photographs throughout the streets of Novara means taking art beyond protected spaces and allowing it to breathe within the urban environment, where every poetic gesture risks being misunderstood or ignored. Yet it is precisely here that the truly revolutionary act takes place: in showing that "painting the clouds" is work just as much as any other occupation.

It is also an invitation to reconsider the figure of the artist as a worker, as someone operating within a system that is often opaque, requiring enormous flexibility while offering very little protection. At the same time, it is a reminder of the beauty of a stubborn and visionary gesture: attempting, every day, to redraw the sky, even when reality insists that one keep one's feet firmly planted on the ground.

And so "painting the clouds" becomes an act of resistance. It is the beauty of the seemingly useless challenging the cynicism of measurable results. It is the quiet declaration of existing as an artist, even when circumstances allow one to be an artist only intermittently. It is a way of rewriting the iconography of cultural labour, recovering its aura of dedication and freedom, while never forgetting the effort that sustains it every single day.
